Wegovy is a popular obesity treatment, used alongside lifestyle changes, that is helping people to lose weight gradually and sustainably. Although every person’s weight loss journey is unique, on average people on Wegovy can lose up to 17% of their starting weight when taken alongside healthy lifestyle changes.
In this article, we’ll look at potential weight loss with Wegovy, things that can impact your journey, and what you can do to maximise your results.
How much weight can you lose on Wegovy?
Studies show that, on average, after 68 weeks of starting Wegovy, people can lose 17% of their initial body weight. Wegovy is one of the most effective weight loss medications available, but weight loss is a slow and steady journey. How much weight you can lose will depend on individual factors, including how your body responds to semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, and the lifestyle changes you make alongside taking the medication.
Also, Wegovy will not make you lose weight on its own – you need to commit to a healthier lifestyle for the most effective and long-lasting results.
As you increase your Wegovy dosage, the amount of weight you lose will usually also increase. Some people may experience side effects, which can impact how much weight you can lose. As a result, you may need to increase the dose at a slower rate, remain on a lower dose for longer, or you may not make it to the maximum maintenance dose, which is considered the most effective dose.
The average Wegovy weight loss when you follow the standard dosage schedule, increasing your dose every 4 weeks up to the 2.4mg maximum dose, looks like:
- weeks 1 to 4 – 2%
- weeks 5 to 8 – 4%
- weeks 9 to 12 – 6%
- weeks 13 to 16 – 8%
- week 17+ – up to 17% (after 68 weeks)
Remember, this is the average weight lost and results can vary from person-to-person. It might take you longer or less time to reach these goals, but Wegovy is a long-term medication so you can keep taking it until you reach your target weight, as long as your doctor still thinks it's suitable. You can also continue taking Wegovy for maintenance once you’ve reached your goal weight, to help maintain it until you’re ready to come off medication.
What factors can affect how much weight you lose on Wegovy?
Several factors may influence the amount of weight you can lose while using Wegovy. Everyone will respond to the medication in different ways, and some factors that may influence this include:
- your age – as you get older, your metabolism slows down, making it harder to lose weight
- your sex – certain stages of life, such as menopause in females, can make it more difficult to lose weight due to declining hormone levels
- your starting body mass index (BMI) – if you start with a higher BMI, you may lose more weight
- your current diet and exercise habits – people making a big change to their eating habits and exercise patterns may see a faster weight loss in the starting weeks or months, due to the bigger change in lifestyle, but this will slow down as your body gets used to new habits
You may experience some side effects while using Wegovy, which can affect the amount of weight you lose. If you are experiencing side effects that get worse or interfere with your daily life, it may take longer to reach higher doses, which can slow down weight loss. In some cases, switching to another weight loss medication, such as Mounjaro or Nevolat may be more beneficial for you.
Weight loss plateau
It’s common for people to go through a weight loss plateau at some point during their weight loss journey. It is important not to worry, as it is usually only temporary, and you can help your body work through it by:
- staying hydrated
- increasing how much exercise you do and at what intensity
- adjusting how many calories you’re eating – use our calorie deficit calculator to help you find out your safest and most effective daily calorie intake for sustainable weight loss
- getting enough sleep
- adding more nutrient-rich foods to your diet, such as wholegrains, proteins, and vegetables
Diet and exercise
Wegovy is only effective if you make suitable lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet and engaging in regular exercise. The most important thing is not to exceed the recommended daily calorie intake, which is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men. However, to lose weight, you should be looking at eating fewer calories than you are burning (called a calorie deficit), which often means eating around 600 calories less than the recommended intake.
It can be helpful to make a diet plan that you can follow alongside Wegovy, so you can make sure you’re eating a balanced diet that prioritises fibre, healthy fats, and protein.
Alongside a good diet, you should also be doing regular exercise. It is recommended to complete either:
- 150 minutes of moderate intensity workouts every week
- 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity every week
It’s best to spread out your exercise over 4 to 5 days a week, or every day, as long as you’re giving your body rest when it needs it to prevent injury.
Moderate activities include anything that increases your heart rate and warms you up, but you can still talk but not sing. Vigorous exercise works you harder, and makes it so that your heart beats faster than with moderate intensity activity. You can tell you’re working vigorously if you cannot say more than a few words without needing to take a breath. Examples of each type of activity are included in the table:

Medical conditions
Certain medical conditions may affect the amount of weight you lose when using Wegovy. There are a number of conditions that can affect your metabolism or hormone levels, which can make it harder to lose weight. These include:
- polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- diabetes
- thyroid disorders
Some other conditions can affect your ability to exercise regularly too, such as depression and chronic pain.
