Wegovy dosages: what you need to know to achieve effective weight loss

If you’ve been prescribed Wegovy, you’ll need to follow a Wegovy dosage regime. This is set in place so that you can get used to the medication, and take it safely. In this guide, we’ll look at the Wegovy dosage schedule in more detail, how to follow it, some common questions about dosages, and how to take Wegovy for effective weight loss.
Overview: Wegovy and its dosage regime
Wegovy is a weight loss injection containing the active ingredient semaglutide. This is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist, meaning it imitates the hormone GLP-1 in your body. This causes your appetite and hunger levels to decrease.
The Wegovy dosage regime:

is a schedule you’ll follow while on treatment with the help of your doctor |
involves increasing your dose every 4 weeks, with each pen containing 4 pre-filled doses of treatment lasting 4 weeks |
is typically increased until you reach the maximum dose (7.2mg) |
must be followed – you cannot increase your dose early, though you can stay on a lower dose for longer, or permanently if you need or want to |
is put in place to reduce how often and how severe side effects are, and has been studied in clinical trials as the best way to take Wegovy |
Available Wegovy doses
There are 6 Wegovy dosages for weight loss:
- Wegovy 0.25mg
- Wegovy 0.5mg
- Wegovy 1mg
- Wegovy 1.7mg
- Wegovy 2.4mg
- Wegovy 7.2mg
The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide, so this means Wegovy 0.25mg will contain 0.25mg of semaglutide per dose, and so on for each Wegovy dose.
Initially, the Wegovy dosage schedule involves increasing your dose each month (always after 4 weeks), starting at the lowest dose of 0.25mg and working your way up to the maintenance dose of 7.2mg.
Wegovy dosage chart
To help you keep an overview of your Wegovy doses, we’ve made a handy Wegovy dosage chart. This includes when to order a new pen and when each pen will finish.
You’ll usually increase your dosage for 20 weeks, but this may be longer if you get side effects and decide to stay on lower doses for longer. Increasing your Wegovy dose in 4-week intervals lowers the risk of common side effects like nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting (being sick), and allows your body to slowly get used to the treatment.
Wegovy dosing schedule
The Wegovy dosing schedule is as follows:
- Weeks 1 to 4 - 0.25 mg
- Weeks 5 to 8 - 0.5 mg
- Weeks 9 to 12 - 1 mg
- Weeks 13 to 16 - 1.7 mg
- Weeks 17 to 20 - 2.4 mg
- Week 21 onward - 7.2mg
Starting dose of Wegovy
The Wegovy starting dose is 0.25mg. You’ll take this once a week for a month before increasing your dose.
Wegovy maximum dosage
The maximum dosage of Wegovy pens is 7.2mg. You should never take more than 7.2mg once a week.
Lowest dosage of Wegovy pens
The lowest dosage of Wegovy pens is 0.25mg. This is the dose you’re starting with at the beginning of your treatment.
Wegovy maintenance dosage
The Wegovy maintenance dosage is 7.2mg, injected once per week. This is the dose you’ll stay on for most of your treatment, and is one of the main doses used for maintenance. The maintenance stage happens when you’ve reached your weight loss goal, or you’re just about to, and you now want to maintain your weight until you’re ready to try on your own. Your doctor can change this if you’re struggling with side effects or if you’re losing weight during the maintenance phase.
When do you increase your Wegovy dosage?
— Dr Crystal Wyllie, Online Doctor. You should follow the Wegovy dosing regime, which means increasing your Wegovy dosage every 4 weeks. You can print it out or write it down on your calendar to help you remember. If you have side effects that are bothering you at any point in time, speak to your doctor. They may suggest staying at the same dose until your body adjusts to the medication.
How many doses are in a Wegovy pen?
Each Wegovy pen contains 4 doses. Wegovy is a once-weekly medication, which means each Wegovy pen will last 4 weeks. Every dosage of Wegovy comes in a different coloured pen, to make it easier to tell them apart.
The colours and doses are:
- green (Wegovy 0.25mg)
- pink (Wegovy 0.5mg)
- brown (Wegovy 1mg)
- blue (Wegovy 1.7mg)
- black (Wegovy 2.4mg)
- purple (Wegovy 7.2mg)
Wegovy 0.25mg
Wegovy 0.25mg comes with 4 doses of semaglutide 0.25mg. It’s the lowest dose and is always the starting dose when taking Wegovy.
Wegovy 0.5mg
Wegovy 0.5mg is the second dose of Wegovy on the dosing schedule. It contains 4 semaglutide doses of 0.5mg.
Wegovy 1mg
This is the third dose of Wegovy on the dosing schedule. Each dose contains 1mg of semaglutide.
Wegovy 1.7mg
This is the fourth dose, containing 1.7mg of Wegovy
Wegovy 2.4mg
This is the fifth dose, containing 2.4mg of Wegovy. It is also a maintenance dose.
Wegovy 7.2mg
This is the sixth and highest dose. It is achieved by injecting the black 2.4mg pen 3 times in a row once a week. It’s the most Wegovy you can take per week and the highest maintenance dose.
Can you start out on 1mg of Wegovy?
“If you are just starting your weight loss journey with GLP-1 injections, you'll usually start on the lowest dose of Wegovy, which is 0.25 mg. Everyone must follow the Wegovy dosing schedule, as it can reduce the risk of side effects. It also gets your body adjusted to the treatment before increasing your dose. If you’ve taken a weight loss injection before, or are switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy, you usually do not start out on 1mg of Wegovy, either. The exception might be if you've recently been on a qualifying dose of Ozempic – your doctor will discuss this with you.” – Dr Crystal Wyllie, Online Doctor.

How often to inject Wegovy
Wegovy should only be injected once a week. You should also stick to the same time and day each week for the best effect.

What happens if I miss a dose of Wegovy?
If you miss a dose of Wegovy, what you do next will depend on how long it’s been since your missed dose.
- If it’s been 5 days or less, take your Wegovy pen as soon as you remember. Inject the next dose on your usual day and time, then carry on treatment as normal, making sure there’s at least 3 days between any 2 doses.
- If it’s been more than 5 days, skip the missed dose and wait till your next dose is due. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects.
Wegovy dosages and other weight loss medications
The Wegovy dosing schedule is different to other weight loss medications, as it contains semaglutide. You can switch from other weight loss medications to Wegovy, but only under the supervision of a doctor.
Wegovy vs Ozempic dosage
Wegovy is a weight loss medication containing semaglutide. Ozempic is a treatment for type 2 diabetes which also contains semaglutide.
Wegovy is available at a higher dose as this is better for weight loss. Ozempic is used for regulating blood sugar levels. Asda Online Doctor doesn’t prescribe Ozempic as an off-label weight loss treatment.
| Wegovy (semaglutide) | Ozempic (semaglutide) | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting dose | 0.25mg | 0.25mg |
| Second dose | 0.5mg after 4 weeks | 0.5mg after 4 weeks |
| Third dose | 1mg after 8 weeks | 1mg after 8 weeks, only if 0.5mg is not regulating your blood sugar well enough |
| Fourth dose | 1.7mg after 12 weeks | N/A |
| Fifth dose | 2.4mg after 16 weeks | N/A |
| Highest dose | 7.2mg after 20 weeks | 2mg, only if lower doses are not regulating your blood sugar well enough |
Switching from Saxenda (or generic liraglutide) to Wegovy: Comparing dosages
Saxenda is a weight loss injection containing liraglutide, which suppresses your appetite and hunger levels similarly to Wegovy. Saxenda is no longer available due to stock shortages, now generic liraglutide (Nevolat) is available, which works in the exact same way it just has a different name, price and packaging.
You can switch from the Saxenda or generic liraglutide (Nevolat) to the Wegovy dosage schedule, but speak with a doctor about how to do this safely. You can’t take liraglutide and Wegovy at the same time, as they both contain a GLP-1 agonist.
| Wegovy (semaglutide) | Saxenda (liraglutide) | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting dose | 0.25mg weekly | 0.6mg daily |
| Second dose | 0.5mg after 4 weeks | 1.2mg after 4 weeks |
| Third dose | 1mg after 8 weeks | 1.8mg after 2 weeks |
| Fourth dose | 1.7mg after 12 weeks | 2.4mg after 3 weeks |
| Fifth dose | 2.4mg after 16 weeks | N/A |
| Highest dose | 7.2mg after 20 weeks | 3mg after 4 weeks |
Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy or Wegovy to Mounjaro
Mounjaro is a weight loss treatment, as well as a type 2 diabetes treatment, containing tirzepatide (a GLP-1 agonist). It’s also a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) agonist, meaning it mimics a hormone that regulates blood sugar and helps your body break down fat and sugar. Before switching medications you should always speak with your doctor and make sure the new treatment is suitable for you.
Your starting dose will depend on which dose you were previously taking. In most cases, your doctor should start you on a lower dose of Wegovy or Mounjaro to make sure it is safe while your body adjusts.
What to expect when switching with Asda Online Doctor:
- No withdrawal – Stopping Wegovy or Mounjaro does not cause withdrawal symptoms
- Temporary appetite increase – Some patients notice an increase in hunger when they switch but this usually gets better as their dose is increased.
- Doctor-led care – We can support you every step of the way with our switch service.

Is it possible to skip doses of Wegovy?
“No, it’s important that you follow your Wegovy dosing schedule and allow Wegovy to build up to the maintenance dose. Skipping doses will decrease how well it works. If you want to skip your dose because you’re getting side effects, speak to your doctor. They may recommend taking a lower dose for longer until you feel better.” – Dr Crystal Wyllie, Online Doctor.

Explore nowFrequently asked questions
How long do I have to take Wegovy for?
Wegovy is an approved long-term weight loss treatment. You can take it for as long as you need it to reach your weight loss goals, under the supervision of a doctor. They’ll monitor your progress and side effects to make sure it remains safe for you to take.
Can I increase my dose early?
No. You should never increase your dose earlier than 4 weeks, as your body needs time to adjust. Increasing too early can increase the risk and severity of your side effects.
What if I want to change the day I take Wegovy?
If you want to change the day you take Wegovy, you can do so, as long as the time between doses is at least 3 days (72 hours). Once you’ve changed to your new day, continue injecting Wegovy once a week. You should not change your Wegovy dose often, as this may decrease its effectiveness and cause side effects. Your body needs to get used to a steady, weekly dosage schedule.
Can I split my Wegovy dose?
No. Wegovy is made with pre-filled doses, splitting the dose would be difficult. It could also cause you to waste medication, as well as increasing the risk of infection by starting and not finishing a dose in one go, as the pen was meant to work. Wegovy is meant to be taken once a week, with the dose you have been prescribed.
If you want to split your dose because you’re getting side effects, speak to your doctor. It’s better to stay on a lower dose for longer before trying to move up again when side effects have settled.
How do I change my Wegovy dose?
Your doctor will prescribe your next dose of Wegovy, and the dose is increased every 4 weeks. You cannot change your dose earlier. However, if you think you need a lower dose or want to stay on your current dose for longer, speak to your doctor and let them know why, such as because of side effects or personal preference.
If you get Wegovy through Asda’s Online Doctor service, you can place a new request through your account to order a new pen. The questionnaire allows you to input the dose you are currently on, so you can order the next dose up or choose to stay on a lower dose. Make sure to add any important information, like any side effects you’ve been having, if any.
Can I stay on a lower dose permanently?
Yes. While the most effective dose in clinical trials is 2.4mg, you do not have to reach the highest dose if you do not want to. Speak to your doctor if you want to stay on a permanent lower dose.
What should I do if I accidentally took 2 doses of Wegovy?
If you accidentally took 2 doses of Wegovy, speak to your doctor or a pharmacist. There may be a chance that you get side effects, so keep any eye on how you feel and let your doctor know if you do get any. If you get any serious side effects such as severe abdominal pain or vomiting and abdominal pain, call 111 or 999 in an emergency, and let them know you’ve taken 2 doses of Wegovy.
Does Wegovy have a golden dose (5th dose)?
No. Each Wegovy pen contains 4 doses, including some leftover medication, which is there for priming your pen. There is no 5th or golden dose, and you should not try to get any remaining liquid out once you have finished your 4th dose. If you inject a ‘5th dose’, we cannot guarantee the dose you are injecting, which can interfere with your standard dosage schedule or cause unwanted side effects.
What is titration?
Titration is a medical term that means slowly increasing a dose of a medication, usually to get your body used to it and reduce side effects from taking a higher dose too soon. Titration is tested in clinical trials, and with Wegovy, the dosage schedule was found to be the safest and most effective way to introduce the medication to your body with fewer side effects.
