Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weekly weight loss injection that has to be stored in a certain way to work properly. If you’re travelling, you’ll need to keep taking your medication if you do not want to disrupt your weight loss journey, but there are a few things to consider.

In this guide, we’ll talk about how to look after your Wegovy pen while you travel and give you some tips on paperwork and storage.

Travel checklist: What to bring when travelling with Wegovy

If you’re travelling with Wegovy, you’ll need to make sure you bring enough medication for your whole trip, a way to store Wegovy safely, and the right paperwork. Here’s what you should bring when travelling with Wegovy:

1: Carry-on bag

Bring your medication with you in carry-on luggage rather than putting it in your checked luggage. Your checked bags that go in the hold go through temperature and pressure changes and can get damaged when being moved, so your medication will be safest kept with you.

2: Prescription and doctor’s note

You’ll need to declare your medication when going through airport security. To do this, it needs to be in the original packaging with your original prescription label attached.

You may also find it helpful to bring a doctor’s note explaining what the medication is for.

3: Cool bag

Whether you’re flying, or travelling by train or car, Wegovy needs to be kept cool when unopened, and below 30°C once opened. A cool bag with ice packs can help with this.

If you choose a plug-in version, you can also use it to keep your medication cool when you get to your destination.

4: Wegovy pens

You may need to bring multiple pens to have enough medication for your whole trip, especially if your dosing schedule will increase while you’re away. Speak to a healthcare professional if you’re not sure about how much to take.

5: Needles

You’ll also need to bring enough spare needles and a sharps bin or some other way of safely storing your used needles. Do not forget to bring a couple more needles than you think you’ll need, just in case.

Can you take Wegovy abroad?

You can usually take Wegovy abroad with you, but you’ll need to prepare for the trip and bring some important things with you. Before going on an international trip, we recommend checking the medical regulations of the country you’re travelling to and making sure it’s legal to bring Wegovy into the country.

Different counties may require special documentation, so it’s always best to check in advance. That way, you can make sure you’ve brought all the paperwork you need.

Generally speaking, you’ll need to bring the medication in its original packaging with your prescription, and you may also need a note from your doctor about why you need it.

Can you fly with Wegovy?

Yes, you should be able to fly with Wegovy, but you’ll need to bring the correct documentation, store it safely, and check your airline’s medication policy.

You should keep your Wegovy pen and needles in your carry-on luggage. That way, you know it’s safe and you avoid exposing it to the extreme temperatures in the hold (which can damage the pen and make Wegovy unsafe to take).

You’ll need to declare your medication at airport security. Keep it in the original packaging with the prescription label attached so security can see it’s your medication. Make sure the name matches your name in your passport. A doctor’s note may also make the process go more smoothly.

Keep all your needles together and make sure they’re stored safely. If you’re using cool blocks to keep your Wegovy at the right temperature, make sure they’re still frozen before passing through security.

How to pack Wegovy for travel

Before being opened, Wegovy should be kept in a refrigerator between 2 and 8°C. If you’re bringing a new Wegovy pen on your trip, you’ll need to keep it within this temperature range. You can do this by using a cool bag or box with ice packs.

When you arrive at your destination, you can either use a plug-in cool box or store your medication in a refrigerator. It’s a good idea to check with your travel accommodation in advance if there is a refrigerator in your room or a communal one where you can store your medication.

If your Wegovy pen is already open, it’s best to store it in a refrigerator between 2 and 8°C. However, you can store it outside the fridge for up to 6 weeks from opening as long as the temperature does not go above 30°C.

Keep your Wegovy in its original packaging and make sure to keep the pen cap on to protect the medication from being exposed to light.

If your medication becomes frozen during travel, it is no longer safe for you to use it. You should dispose of it safely – ask at your hotel about how to do this, or bring it home and dispose of it at your local pharmacy.

Tips for dose changes while you’re away

To achieve the best results while taking Wegovy, continue to follow your dosing plan even when away. This may mean you need to increase your dose while travelling.

If you know you are due to increase your dose while away, make sure to bring the new, higher-dose Wegovy pen with you.

Sometimes, people can experience side effects after a dose increase. If you’re worried about side effects and know that you’re due a dose increase while you’re away, it’s a good idea to speak to a healthcare professional. They may suggest waiting to increase your dose until you’re back from your trip.

Keeping up with weight loss while travelling

For the best weight loss results with Wegovy, you’ll need to eat a balanced, reduced-calorie diet and exercise regularly. Although it can be harder to keep this up while you’re away, there are a few things that can help while you’re travelling.

Plan ahead

When you’re overly hungry, it’s tempting to reach for something quick and easily available, which often means high-calorie foods with few nutrients. It’s a good idea to keep some healthy snacks with you while you travel, just in case.

Avoid overindulging

When you’re on holiday, you want to enjoy yourself, and this can sometimes mean drinking and eating too much. Try to remember your portion sizes even when you’re away, and remember that alcohol contains a lot of empty calories.

Keep things balanced

Try to include a variety of whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein in your diet even while you’re on holiday.

Keep exercising

You do not have to spend your trip in the gym, but try to do something active every day. This can be walking around and exploring a new place, swimming a few laps in the hotel pool, or doing a quick workout video in your room before heading out for the day.
