Wegovy is one of a range of medicines that can help to support weight loss. If you’re taking Wegovy, you may want to know whether it’s safe to drink alcohol.
It’s important to be aware that Wegovy is a relatively new medication so its long-term interactions with alcohol are still being studied.
This guide explains what we currently know about alcohol and Wegovy.
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a medication that contains the active ingredient semaglutide. This can help with weight loss when taken according to a doctor or pharmacist’s instructions.
It works by mimicking glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) – a hormone that helps control blood sugar and appetite.
Taking semaglutide helps reduce hunger, promotes the feeling of fullness, and improves blood sugar control, all of which support weight loss efforts.

Can you drink alcohol while taking Wegovy?
Yes, you can drink alcohol while taking Wegovy, but with caution.
Wegovy does not interact with alcohol, but alcohol can still worsen side effects.
Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, does not advise against consuming alcohol in their product leaflet. However, drinking alcohol while on Wegovy may worsen common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue, which have been reported by users of GLP-1 medications.
Because alcohol can lower blood sugar and semaglutide changes how your body regulates appetite and insulin, the combination can make your blood sugar levels more unpredictable if you have diabetes.
Both prescribers and pharmacists generally advise limiting alcohol consumption, particularly if you get gastrointestinal symptoms or other side effects from the medication.
We recommend you speak with your doctor if you have liver issues, diabetes, or a history of digestive sensitivity, as these conditions can increase the risks associated with mixing alcohol and Wegovy. Always discuss your alcohol intake with your prescribing doctor to make sure you're making safe choices while on the medication.
"While it’s generally considered safe to drink in moderation while taking weight loss medication like Wegovy, doctors advise staying within the standard guidance of no more than 14 units per week, spread across several days. For some people, alcohol can also increase the chance of unpleasant side effects, including stomach upsets.” – Dr Crystal Wyllie, Online Doctor.
What is a unit of alcohol?
To give you a sense of what counts as a unit according to NHS England, here’s a quick breakdown:
- 1 unit = half a pint of regular beer/lager/cider, half a small glass of wine, or a single measure of spirits
- 1.5 units = an alcopop or 275ml bottle of regular lager
- 2 units = a pint of regular beer or a 440ml can of regular cider
- 3 units = a 250ml glass of 12% wine or a pint of strong lager
- 9 units = a 75cl bottle of 12% wine

How alcohol affects weight loss results on Wegovy
Alcohol does not affect how Wegovy works, but it can influence your weight loss results. For example, it can slow your weight loss progress in the following ways.
Adding ‘empty’ calories to your diet
Alcohol provides a significant number of empty calories – calories that do not offer nutritional value. These extra calories may slow or prevent further weight loss.
Lowering inhibitions
Alcohol tends to reduce self-control around food choices. This could hinder your weight loss efforts by increasing calorie intake.
Impacting metabolism and hydration
Alcohol can temporarily mean the body burns less fat and lead to dehydration, both of which are important factors in effective weight management. Dehydration, in particular, can also worsen side effects like dizziness and fatigue.
Reducing sleep quality
Alcohol can affect sleep quality, and poor sleep is linked to imbalances in hunger hormones. This can lead to increased appetite and cravings, potentially undermining weight loss efforts.
Possible drawbacks of mixing Wegovy and alcohol
If you drink alcohol while taking Wegovy, you may experience certain side effects.
Some of the common side effects of Wegovy (such as nausea) may become more noticeable when alcohol is consumed. This may be because alcohol can have similar effects on the body. The table outlines symptoms that may be more likely or more noticeable, based on what alcohol and Wegovy can each cause separately:
| Why it may increase | What you can do | |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea or stomach upset | Wegovy commonly causes nausea – alcohol can irritate the stomach. For some people, combining alcohol and Wegovy may worsen nausea. |
Avoid alcohol on Wegovy injection days or if you already feel nauseous. |
| Dizziness or tiredness | Alcohol can lower blood pressure and cause dehydration. Wegovy may also cause dizziness in some users. |
Stay hydrated and avoid heavy drinking. |
| Digestive discomfort | Both alcohol and Wegovy can cause digestive symptoms such as bloating or discomfort. |
Drink smaller amounts and avoid strong or high-alcohol volume drinks. |
| Changes in blood sugar | Wegovy affects insulin response; alcohol can lower blood sugar. This combination may make levels more unpredictable if you have diabetes, especially if you use insulin or sulfonylureas. |
Eat before drinking and monitor your blood sugar closely if you have diabetes. Aim to eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of just 3 meals per day. |
➤ If you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, you should be especially cautious, as alcohol can worsen blood sugar fluctuations, which can be difficult to manage when taking Wegovy.
Who should not drink alcohol while on Wegovy?
There are situations when it’s best to abstain from alcohol completely while taking Wegovy. These include if you are:
- getting persistent nausea, vomiting, or dizziness on Wegovy, as alcohol can make these symptoms worse
- managing type 2 diabetes or are taking insulin therapy, as alcohol can cause significant drops in blood sugar
- diagnosed with liver disease or pancreatitis, as alcohol can put additional strain on these organs, especially when combined with medications like Wegovy
- new to Wegovy – particularly during the dose-titration phase, when your body is adjusting to the medication
➤ If any of these situations apply to you, speak with your doctor before drinking alcohol again. For further assistance, use Asda Online Doctor’s weight loss treatment service.
3 signs you need to speak to a doctor
If you have any persistent or concerning symptoms after drinking alcohol while on Wegovy, it's important to speak with your doctor. This includes symptoms like:
- Persistent vomiting.
- Severe dehydration.
- Confusion or disorientation.
- Severe abdominal pain.
These are symptoms of excessive alcohol consumption, but they’re also signs of a more serious reaction to the medication or an underlying problem that requires medical attention, so they should not be ignored.
If you're unsure whether alcohol consumption is affecting your progress on Wegovy, your prescribing clinician or a doctor from Asda Online Doctor’s weight loss treatment service can provide guidance and make sure that your treatment plan remains on track.
Alcohol and Wegovy: proceed with caution
There is currently no evidence that drinking alcohol while taking Wegovy is unsafe, but long-term data is limited.
However, it’s important to remember this is a relatively new medication, and we just do not know enough about how it might interact with alcohol in the long term. So, it’s generally best to proceed with caution. In any case, reducing alcohol consumption has plenty of other benefits – not only for weight loss, but for your general health too.
If you're looking to start or continue your weight loss journey, Asda Online Doctor’s weight loss treatment service is available to help guide you through the process, including managing your Wegovy plan and any concerns about alcohol consumption.
Frequently asked questions
Does alcohol affect how Wegovy works?
No. Alcohol does not directly interfere with the way Wegovy works, but it can increase side effects like nausea, dizziness, and digestive discomfort.
Alcohol can also add empty calories, which may affect your overall weight loss results. Moderation is key – UK guidelines advise adults not to drink more than 14 units per week. It's essential to monitor your body’s response when drinking while on Wegovy.
Is it safe to drink occasionally while using Wegovy?
Yes. There is no specific warning against occasional drinking while using Wegovy, but evidence is limited and alcohol can worsen side effects, so moderation is important.
If you get side effects, we’d recommend that you reduce your alcohol intake or avoid drinking, particularly on dosing days or when you feel unwell.
How does alcohol affect blood sugar when taking Wegovy?
Alcohol can lower blood sugar levels, particularly for people with diabetes or insulin resistance. Since Wegovy works by regulating insulin secretion and controlling blood sugar, drinking alcohol can cause unpredictable blood sugar fluctuations.
It’s important to eat before drinking and limit alcohol intake to prevent blood sugar-related issues. Always monitor your blood sugar closely when drinking while on Wegovy. If you can’t easily do this, look out for low sugar symptoms such as:
- shakiness
- sweating
- headache
- drowsiness
- weakness
- dizziness
- confusion
- irritability
- hunger
- fast heartbeat
- feeling jittery
Can drinking slow down my weight loss results on Wegovy?
Potentially. Alcohol contains a lot of empty calories which may increase your total calorie intake if consumed in addition to your daily calorie allowance.
For some people, alcohol consumption can lower your inhibitions, making you more likely to overeat or make unhealthy food choices. It can also affect sleep quality, which in turn can influence hunger hormones and cravings, further affecting your weight loss goals.
Are there specific types of alcohol I should avoid on Wegovy?
No. There are no specific types of alcohol you must avoid, but choosing lower-alcohol, lower-sugar options is safer.
Choosing lower-alcohol drinks can help minimise the impact on your metabolism and hydration. Avoiding sugary cocktails or high-calorie drinks is also a good idea, as they can lead to unwanted weight gain, which could slow down your progress on Wegovy.
Can alcohol interact with other medications I take alongside Wegovy?
Yes. Alcohol can interact with other medications, particularly those used to manage diabetes or blood pressure, by affecting their absorption or efficacy. When combined with Wegovy, alcohol may worsen side effects like dizziness, dehydration, and nausea.
It’s important to speak to your doctor if you're taking any other medications alongside Wegovy, to understand any potential interactions with alcohol and ensure your treatment plan remains safe.
Does Wegovy reduce alcohol cravings or tolerance?
Potentially. There is some evidence that links Wegovy to reduced alcohol cravings, but long-term data is limited.
Wegovy does not affect alcohol tolerance directly, but by curbing overall cravings, some people may find they have fewer impulses to drink, especially if they’re using food as a primary source of comfort.
Should I stop Wegovy temporarily if I plan to drink alcohol?
There is no need to stop Wegovy temporarily if you plan to drink alcohol. However, it’s advisable to drink in moderation and be mindful of how alcohol affects your body. Stopping Wegovy could affect your weight loss goals and if you take longer than a 2-week break, you’d need to start again from the lowest dose.
If you get increased symptoms like nausea, dizziness, or fatigue, consider reducing alcohol intake or avoiding it altogether, particularly on the day of your injection. Always pay close attention to how your body responds.
What are the long-term risks of mixing alcohol and Wegovy?
Because Wegovy is still a relatively new drug, we do not know about long-term risks of drinking alcohol while taking Wegovy. If you’re concerned about alcohol consumption while on GLP-1 weight loss medications, speak to your doctor for advice.
