How does Lizinna work?

Lizinna contains ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen) and norgestimate (a progestogen). These are similar to the female sex hormones your body produces naturally. Lizinna works to prevent pregnancy by:

  • making the mucus around your cervix thicker, which stops sperm from entering the womb
  • preventing ovulation, which is the monthly release of an egg from your ovaries

Lizinna does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or HIV.

Who can take Lizinna?

You can take Lizinna for birth control if you:

  • are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • do not have liver disease, liver cancer, liver tumours or jaundice
  • do not have a history of breast cancer or other types of cancer affected by sex hormones
  • do not have high levels of fat or cholesterol in your blood
  • do not have very high blood pressure
  • do not have severe diabetes
  • do not have a history of heart attacks, stroke, or angina
  • do not have a history of blood clots
  • do not have breast cancer
  • do not have hepatitis C
  • are not allergic to any of the ingredients listed in Lizinna

You’ll need to check with your doctor before you can use Lizinna if you currently have:

  • ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease (types of inflammatory bowel disease)
  • systemic lupus erythematosus
  • recently given birth

To see if Lizinna is suitable for you, read the patient information leaflet in your pill pack or speak to your doctor.
