Clotrimazole is mainly used to treat fungal skin infections like thrush, caused by a fungus known as Candida albicans.
Candida fungi naturally grow around moist and warm areas on the body such as the mouth or genital areas. However, when it multiplies out of control, it can cause fungal infections like thrush.
Clotrimazole kills Candida fungi by damaging their cell membranes, which causes the contents of the cells to leak out, killing the fungi and eventually clearing up the infection.

Canesten cream and Clotrimazole 1% cream both contain Clotrimazole as the active ingredient for treating fungal infections. They are both licensed for treating thrush and work as well as each other.
However, we only currently offer Clotrimazole 1% cream for treating thrush in men, and it is also a cheaper option.
If you're a woman, you can order our treatment for thrush online here. You should also check with a doctor to make sure your symptoms are not caused by cystitis or bacterial vaginosis.

Apply your Clotrimazole cream lightly and evenly around the affected areas, about two or three times daily, and rub it in gently.
You should aim to use the cream for at least two weeks for treating thrush infections. Keep using your cream for the full two weeks, even if your symptoms get better. This makes sure the infection is completely gone.
Clotrimazole cream should only be used on external areas of your body and should not be put in your eyes or mouth even if you have symptoms of thrush in these areas.
Thrush isn’t an STI, but you should avoid sex until your symptoms clear up. If you’re worried you might also have symptoms of an STI then you can order a home STI test kit online from ZAVA as well.
Clotrimazole cream may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives like condoms or diaphragms. If you’re using this cream on your genital areas and using condoms, you should discuss with your partner about using another form of contraceptive protection for at least five days after using this cream.
