Thrush can affect moist, warm areas of the body, as this is an ideal place for it to grow. Male thrush is when this affects the penis.

We provide one male thrush treatment, which is clotrimazole. This is an effective treatment against the fungus that causes thrush. Clotrimazole is often found under the brand name Canesten. The active ingredient (medication) clotrimazole is an antifungal treatment. This can fight the cause of the infection, getting rid of male thrush. In men, it is used as an external cream that can be applied to the infected area.
Clotrimazole can treat thrush within a week but you should use the treatment for up to 2 weeks. This is to stop the infection coming back. Symptoms should get better within 3 days. Clotrimazole is suitable for most men, but speak to a doctor if you have any open sores on the penis or if this is the first time you have had thrush.
Make sure to only use the treatment on external skin. Apply clotrimazole 2 to 3 times daily, using a thin layer each time. Make sure to rub it in gently and always wash your hands before and after use.

The most common side effects of male thrush treatment are:
- pain, itching, or burning on the infected area
- irritated, red skin
These are also some common symptoms of thrush but if the cream keeps making your thrush symptoms worse, speak to your doctor or a pharmacist. Try using smaller amounts of clotrimazole cream, in case you are using too much.
There are not any rare side effects of clotrimazole but there is always a risk of a serious allergic reaction, as with any medication. If you get a skin rash, begin to wheeze, or have trouble breathing, these are signs of an allergic reaction. If this happens, you should go to A&E or call 999 right away.

Clotrimazole can be used by most men but you should speak to your doctor first if you have:
- never had thrush before
- had thrush more than 2 times in a 6 month period
- open sores on the penis
- abnormal discharge
- had an STI
- an allergy to any ingredients in the medication
There are no medications that will interact with clotrimazole cream, when used as a male thrush treatment on the skin. You can drink alcohol while using this treatment. It is recommended to avoid sex until your thrush has cleared. Clotrimazole cream can also damage some forms of contraception, such as latex diaphragms and condoms. You should make sure you or your partner are using additional contraception when using this cream, and for 5 days after you have finished.
