Switching from Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill: A guide

The Wegovy pill is the first oral version of semaglutide approved for weight loss in the UK. Like Wegovy injections, it works by reducing appetite, increasing feelings of fullness, and helping you eat fewer calories to support weight loss.
If you're currently using Wegovy injections, you may be wondering whether switching to a daily tablet could suit your lifestyle better.
In this guide, we explain how to switch from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets, the dose you may be able to switch to, who may be suitable for switching, and what you can expect during the transition.
Why switch from the Wegovy injection to the Wegovy pill?
While Wegovy injections are an effective weight loss treatment, a daily tablet may be a more convenient option for some people. Because both treatments contain semaglutide, switching between them is generally straightforward.
Some common reasons for switching include:
1. You prefer not to inject
Even if you've been using injections successfully, you may find weekly injections inconvenient, uncomfortable, or you’d simply prefer taking a tablet. A phobia of needles is also a very common reason for switching to tablets. If you get a lot of anxiety around injection days, switching to the Wegovy tablet could be a good option for you.
Sometimes, people using injections develop something called needle fatigue, which can make weekly injections seem daunting and may cause you to develop anxiety around taking them.
2. You travel regularly
Wegovy tablets are often easier to manage while travelling. Unlike unused Wegovy pens, tablets do not need to be kept in the fridge, making them more convenient for holidays, business trips, or frequent travel. Plus, all you need is a packet of pills, rather than your injections, a cool bag, spare needles, and a sharps bin or somewhere safe to put used needles.
3. You want a treatment that fits into your daily routine
Taking a daily tablet can help create a consistent routine if you’re finding a weekly schedule hard to remember. If you’re already used to taking other daily tablets, you may find this more convenient.
However, before making the switch, it’s important to know that the Wegovy tablet must be taken in a very specific way to make sure it’s absorbed properly. You’ll need to make sure this can fit into your daily routine. The Wegovy tablet must be taken:
- after at least an 8-hour fast, on an empty stomach, so most people take it as soon as they get up
- at least 30 minutes before any other drinks, oral medications, and food – which means you’ll have to wait 30 minutes before your morning tea or coffee
- with no more than 120ml of plain water
It must be swallowed whole, but the pill is very small, making it easy to swallow. Breaking the tablet or trying to dissolve it will reduce how much semaglutide is absorbed, possibly reducing its effectiveness.
4. You’re moving into weight maintenance
Weight maintenance is where you continue taking weight loss treatment, but to maintain your weight, rather than lose more. This can be long-term, or until you feel ready to stop taking weight loss medication.
If you've already achieved most or all of your weight loss goals, switching to a daily Wegovy tablet may feel like a simpler or more cost-effective, long-term option if you do not want to continue with injections, but still want to maintain semaglutide's benefits.
You do not need to switch for maintenance, especially if Wegovy injections are working for you, but it's an option if you want to continue with treatment but are finding injections difficult to manage.
5. You want to avoid injection site reactions
Although Wegovy injection site reactions are usually mild, some people experience ongoing or more severe redness, itching, bruising, or irritation after injections. While Wegovy injections and tablets have very similar side effects, the tablets do not cause injection site reactions, and so could be an option if this is a side effect you've been finding difficult to manage.
How to switch from Wegovy injection to the pill
Switching from the Wegovy injection to the Wegovy pill is easy and can be done in 3 simple steps:
- Finish your last Wegovy injection.
- Wait 1 week. This is the usual break between injections, and it gives time for semaglutide to be reduced in your body to a safe amount before you continue with your new treatment.
- After 1 week, start taking Wegovy tablets every day, following the instructions carefully.
Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate Wegovy tablet dose to start on based on your current injection dose and how well you've tolerated treatment so far.

Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill dose conversion
There is no official Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill dose conversion because semaglutide is absorbed differently when taken as an injection or a tablet. Based on clinical guidance and evidence, the maximum recommended Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill switching doses are:
| Current Wegovy injection dose | Recommended Wegovy tablet dose |
|---|---|
0.25mg |
4mg |
0.5mg or 1mg |
9mg |
1.7mg, 2.4mg, or 7.2mg |
25mg |
Although this conversion table provides general guidance, your doctor may recommend a different starting Wegovy tablet dose if you have experienced side effects. If you wait longer than 2 weeks after your last injection to switch to Wegovy pills, you will need to start at the lowest dose.

Who can switch from Wegovy injection to tablets?
Most people using Wegovy injections can switch to Wegovy tablets if their doctor believes it is appropriate. When switching, you usually do not need to meet the same body mass index (BMI) requirements as starting weight loss treatment, because you're only switching to continue your weight loss.
This means even if your BMI is now below 30 (or 27 if you have weight-related health conditions), your doctor may still be able to prescribe Wegovy tablets if suitable.
You may be suitable for switching from Wegovy injections to tablets if you:
- are currently taking Wegovy injections
- want to continue semaglutide treatment without injections
- are tolerating treatment well, with little to no side effects
- have not yet reached your goal weight
- want support maintaining your weight loss results
Because the injection and tablet contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, switching is usually simpler than changing to a completely different weight loss medication.
Your doctor may advise against switching if your current treatment is causing significant side effects until these settle. However, in some cases, it may be more suitable to take a tablet, such as if you are getting injection site reactions.
What to expect when switching from Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill
Most people notice very little difference when switching from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets because both treatments contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide.
This means apart from the way it’s taken, the effects of the tablet and injection are the same. Side effects are almost identical, though the tablet can cause stomach-related side effects slightly more often, possibly because it’s absorbed through your stomach and taken on an empty stomach.
While your body adjusts to the oral form of semaglutide, you may notice some temporary changes during the first few weeks.
Appetite control
Most people continue to experience:
- reduced hunger
- increased fullness after meals
- fewer cravings
- less food noise
If you've moved from a maintenance Wegovy injection dose, such as 2.4mg, to the equivalent Wegovy tablet dose, appetite control should remain similar. There’s a chance that you notice a temporary decrease in these effects.
If this does happen, it should get better with a few weeks of daily treatment, and may be caused by your body adjusting to the tablet. Make sure to keep taking your Wegovy tablet daily and according to the instructions, or this could reduce its effects.
Side effects
Some people may get very common but mild digestive side effects during the switching period, including:
- feeling or being sick (nausea or vomiting)
- bloating
- indigestion
- diarrhoea
- constipation
- stomach discomfort
These effects are usually temporary and improve as your body gets used to the tablet. If you were not getting Wegovy injection side effects, it’s likely that you will not get side effects on the tablet either, though if you have a sensitive stomach, you may react differently when taking tablets.
Weight loss progress
Switching from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets is unlikely to have a major impact on your overall weight loss progress. As the active ingredient is the same and you’re not taking a break between treatments, semaglutide should stay at a steady level within your body. While some temporary changes may happen in some people, this should settle within a few weeks or once you reach the 25mg maintenance dose, if you do not start on it.
Clinical studies have shown that people taking 25mg oral semaglutide lost an average of 17% of their starting body weight after 64 weeks. This is very similar to the average weight loss seen with the 2.4mg Wegovy injection, which is also 17% on average, but after 72 weeks.
Can I switch back to injections if the pill doesn't work for me?
Yes. If Wegovy tablets are not suitable, your doctor can help you switch back to injections. However, it's often worth giving the tablets enough time to work before deciding to change treatment again. This may mean waiting until you've been taking them for several weeks or until you've reached the 25mg maintenance dose, as appetite control and weight loss effects can improve as your dose increases.
If you're experiencing side effects that are difficult to manage, or you're struggling to take the tablets correctly every day, speak to your doctor. They can assess whether returning to injections sooner would be more suitable.
When switching back to Wegovy injections, you'll usually restart at an injection dose that matches your current tablet strength rather than automatically returning to your previous injection dose. The recommended switching guide is:
| Current Wegovy tablet dose | Recommended Wegovy injection dose |
|---|---|
1.5mg |
0.25mg |
4mg |
0.5mg |
9mg |
1mg |
25mg |
1.7mg |
Your doctor may recommend a different dose depending on how you've responded to Wegovy tablet treatment and whether you've had any side effects.
Keep in mind that changing between tablets and injections multiple times can make it harder to maintain a consistent weight loss treatment routine and may slow your overall progress. If possible, give your body time to adjust to the tablet before deciding whether it's the right option for you.
FAQs
Do I need a new prescription to switch from injections to tablets?
Yes. Wegovy tablets and Wegovy injections are prescribed as separate treatments, so you will need a new prescription before switching. Your doctor will review your current dose and recommend the best tablet dose to switch to. If you switch with Asda Online Doctor, we’ll provide a new prescription and your treatment, either to be collected at an Asda Pharmacy or delivered to your home.
Will I experience more side effects when making the switch?
Not usually. Because both treatments contain semaglutide, most people get similar side effects before and after switching. You may notice mild digestive symptoms while adjusting to the tablet, but these are usually temporary and settle after a few weeks.
Just like Wegovy injections, side effects can come back after a dose increase, but if you start on 25mg tablets, you will not be increasing your dose further.
How long do I need to wait after my last injection to start the pill?
You just need to wait the usual 1-week break between your last injection and starting the Wegovy pill. This means you will not be taking too much semaglutide at once and will reduce the risk of side effects when starting Wegovy tablet treatment.
Will switching affect my weight loss progress?
Switching from Wegovy injections to tablets is not likely to affect your overall weight loss progress. Most people maintain similar appetite control and weight loss results after switching because both treatments contain semaglutide. Any temporary changes are usually short-lived while your body adjusts to the tablet version of the medication.
