The Wegovy pill is a once-daily weight loss tablet containing semaglutide. Unlike weekly GLP-1 injections, the tablet must be taken in a very specific way to help your body absorb the medication properly. Following the instructions carefully can help you get the best possible results from your weight loss treatment.
In this guide, we'll explain exactly how to take the Wegovy pill, when to take it, what you can and cannot eat or drink, what to do if you miss a pill, and practical tips to help you build the tablet into your daily routine.
How to take the Wegovy pill: Step-by-step instructions
Taking the Wegovy pill correctly is important because having anything else in your stomach, apart from up to 120ml of plain water, can reduce how much semaglutide your body absorbs. For the treatment to work as intended, you should follow the same routine every day.
You should take your Wegovy pill:
- Once a day.
- First thing after waking up, after fasting for at least 8 hours.
- With no more than 120ml of plain water.
- By swallowing the tablet whole without chewing, crushing or splitting it. If you do this, the tablet may not work.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking any other oral medication. This includes your morning cup of coffee or tea.
Wegovy tablets must be taken:
First thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, and with a small sip of water (the manufacturers advise no more than 120ml) |
30 minutes before you eat, drink, or take any other medication |
Although you can wait longer than 30 minutes before breakfast, you should never wait less than this. Eating or drinking too soon can reduce how much semaglutide reaches your bloodstream, possibly making your treatment less effective. If you take other oral medications in the morning, wait to take them or speak to your doctor if they are time-sensitive and you’re not sure.
How much water am I allowed to drink with my tablet?
You are allowed to drink no more than 120ml of plain water with your Wegovy tablet. Drinking a small amount of water helps the tablet dissolve and may make it easier to swallow, but too much water may reduce how much medication your body absorbs.
Research found that taking the Wegovy pill with more than 120ml of plain water reduced absorption by around 40%.
Can I drink my morning coffee or tea during the 30-minute waiting window?
No. During the 30-minute waiting window, you should not drink tea, coffee, or any other beverages. The only drink you should have is a small amount of plain water used to swallow your tablet. Once 30 minutes have passed, you can have your usual tea or coffee and breakfast.
When is the best time of day to take the Wegovy pill?
The best time to take the Wegovy pill is right after waking up, so most people take it first thing in the morning. This naturally follows an overnight 8-hour+ fast and makes it easier to follow the 30-minute waiting period before eating or drinking. It does not matter what time of day you take it, as long as you follow the instructions for taking it correctly.
Your schedule may be different, for instance if you work nights or shift patterns. Just make sure you’re sticking to the same time each day and following the instructions for taking it, even if this means you take your pill in the evening after sleeping in the day.
Can I take the Wegovy pill at night?
Yes, but only if you've fasted for at least 8 hours before. If you work permanent night shifts or sleep during the day for any reason, you can take your tablet after waking up, regardless of the time.
Do not take it at night and fast all day if you sleep during the night, as fasting for so long is dangerous and could make you ill, as well as increase the chance of Wegovy pill side effects. If your sleep pattern changes regularly, speak to your doctor about the best routine for you.
Why must the Wegovy pill be taken on an empty stomach?
Taking the Wegovy pill on an empty stomach makes sure you receive a full, effective dose.
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide together with a special absorption enhancer called SNAC. This ingredient protects semaglutide from being broken down in your stomach before it’s had a chance to be absorbed.
Without SNAC, oral semaglutide has a very low absorption rate, which means the active ingredient would be broken down by enzymes and acid in your stomach, making it ineffective.
Food, drinks, and other tablets can stop SNAC from protecting the tablet, reducing absorption. If semaglutide is not absorbed properly, it may reduce its effectiveness for weight loss.
The 3 core rules to remember
Rule 1: Take your Wegovy pill immediately upon waking on an empty stomach.
Rule 2: Restrict your water intake when taking the pill – no more than 120ml.
Rule 3: Maintain a strict 30-minute wait.
Tips for creating a morning routine around the Wegovy tablet
Building your Wegovy pill into your morning routine makes it easier to remember every day.
Remembering your pill
To help remember to take the Wegovy pill first thing when you wake up, you could:
- keep your medication beside your bed or beside your toothbrush if you always brush your teeth first thing in the morning
- put a post-it note or piece of paper beside your bed, or on your bathroom mirror, to remind yourself to take it when you’re up
- set a daily phone reminder or name your phone alarm to ‘take Wegovy pill’ so you’re reminded as soon as you wake up
Having enough time in the morning
Depending on how much time you have in the morning, it might help to:
- go to bed and wake up a little earlier, so you have time for the 30-minute fast
- make breakfast the night before or meal prep, so you have a healthy breakfast to take with you to work
- get a refillable cup so that you can take your morning coffee with you if you will not have time to drink it at home
What to do in the 30-minute waiting period
Once you’ve taken the tablet, you need to wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking. It helps to set a timer so you know when it’s been exactly 30 minutes. You could use this time to:
- shower
- get dressed
- walk the dog
- exercise or go to the gym
- make your lunch for the day
- get your breakfast ready
Make sure to eat breakfast and drink once the waiting period has finished, rather than keeping your stomach empty for a long time after taking it. This might help with very common side effects.
What to do if I miss my daily Wegovy pill?
If you miss your daily Wegovy pill, you’ll usually skip it completely and take your next tablet at the usual time the following day, unless it’s not long since you were supposed to take it and you:
- still have an empty stomach
- can still follow the 30-minute waiting period
Do not take 2 tablets together on the same day.
This table can help you understand what to do if you miss your daily Wegovy pill in different scenarios:
| Scenario | What to do about your missed Wegovy pill |
|---|---|
I woke up late |
You can still take your tablet if you have not yet eaten, had anything to drink, or taken any other oral medications. Make sure you can also stick to the 30-minute fasting period, otherwise, you should skip the dose. It’s best to take it at the same time each day, so try to stick to the same schedule. |
I’ve already had breakfast or a drink |
Skip that day's dose and restart your normal schedule the next day. |
I forgot it completely |
Skip that day's dose and restart your normal schedule the next day. If you miss more than 7 pills in a row, you will need to restart the Wegovy pill dosage schedule at the lowest dose. |
Can I take the Wegovy pill with other medications?
You cannot take the Wegovy pill with other oral medications at the same time. It’s usually safe to take it alongside creams, gels, or injections, but always check with your doctor.
Please note: If you take other oral medications when you wake up, wait until 30 minutes have passed before taking them.
The Wegovy pill may interact with certain medications. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you take:
- insulin or sulfonylureas for diabetes – your diabetes doctor may need to change the dose of your other medications so you do not get very low blood sugar
- levothyroxine for thyroid disease – you may need regular thyroid blood tests
- other GLP-1 medications or any other weight loss medication – you should not take Wegovy with other weight loss treatments
- warfarin or similar oral medications to reduce blood clots – you may need regular blood tests to check your blood clotting
- the contraceptive pill – if you have vomiting or diarrhoea after taking the Wegovy pill it can be less effective, so you may need another form of contraception to prevent pregnancy
What happens if I accidentally eat something with my Wegovy pill?
If you accidentally eat or drink something with your Wegovy pill or less than 30 minutes after taking it, you are not likely to get the full effect of the medication. Some or all of the semaglutide from the medication will not be absorbed properly.
Do not take another Wegovy tablet to replace it, instead:
- continue with your day as normal
- take your next dose at the usual time the following day
- follow the instructions carefully from then on, maybe setting a 30-minute timer or checking the instructions again before taking it if you need a reminder
Doing this once is unlikely to cause harm, but doing it regularly may reduce how well Wegovy pills work for you. If you find it difficult to follow the dosing instructions, you have been missing regular doses, or eating and drinking before the 30-minute time limit, speak to your doctor for advice.
