How to store Mounjaro correctly

For Mounjaro to work effectively, it’s essential that the pens are stored correctly. How you should store them, mostly depends on whether they are currently in use or not.

For example, all unopened Mounjaro pens should be stored in the fridge until you need them. That’s why when they are delivered, they are packaged in temperature-controlled packaging, to prolong their effectiveness.

To store your unopened Mounjaro pens, you should:

  • keep them in the fridge between 2 and 8°C
  • store them in their original, unopened packaging which clearly displays their use-by date
  • avoid using fridges that are likely to stop working or fluctuate in temperature
  • avoid storing unused Mounjaro pens in the fridge door as this is where the temperature is most likely to fluctuate
  • avoid freezing the Mounjaro pens – if they become frozen you must throw them away

If the unused Mounjaro pens have been stored incorrectly, frozen, or are past their expiry date, they should be thrown away.

If you’re currently using a Mounjaro Kwikpen, you can store it as follows:

  • unrefrigerated for up to 30 days as long as the temperature does not go above 30°C or in the fridge between 2 and 8°C
  • away from heat and out of sight and reach of children
  • throw the used pen away 30 days after you first used it or after receiving 4 weekly doses – the pen will always last for all 4 doses unless you miss a dose

How long does Mounjaro last in the fridge?

Unused Mounjaro pens can be used until the expiry date printed on the label if they have been kept in the fridge at a temperature between 2 and 8°C.

The shelf life of unused Mounjaro is 24 months. Once open, the shelf life is 30 days from the date of opening.

How to store Mounjaro after first use?

Once you have opened a Mounjaro pen, it can be stored either:

How long can Mounjaro be out of the fridge?

Once a Mounjaro pen is in use, it can be stored out of the refrigerator for up to 30 days, as long as the temperature stays below 30°C.

If you have not opened a Mounjaro pen, it must be stored in the fridge at all times until you are ready to use it.

What to do if Mounjaro has been stored incorrectly

What you should do with the Mounjaro pen if it has been stored incorrectly depends on how it has been incorrectly stored.

Here are some scenarios you may or may not relate to, and what we recommend to ensure safe and suitable use of Mounjaro:

Scenario What you should do

"I’ve left an unused Mounjaro pen out of the fridge overnight."

You’ll have 30 days to use the pen once it has been stored out of the fridge. If you can use this pen after your current one is finished, you may still be able to get all 4 doses out of it before needing to discard it, depending on how many doses are left in your current pen.

"I’ve left a used Mounjaro pen out of the fridge overnight."

As long as the pen was stored below 30°C, it should be fine to use for up to 30 days. Put it back in the fridge as soon as you remember.

"The Mounjaro pen has frozen."

Whether used or not, if a Mounjaro pen is or has been frozen, you must throw it away.

"The room temperature exceeded 30°C. Can I use the Mounjaro pen?"

No, if you have stored your pen at room temperature and it has exceeded 30°C, you must throw the pen(s) away.

"I’ve stored the unopened pen correctly in the fridge but it’s past its expiry date, can I still use it?"

No, if the expiry date has passed, you must not use the pen.

How to store Mounjaro while travelling

If you’re going to travel while taking Mounjaro, there are a few things you’ll need to make sure your medication is stored correctly. This will keep it usable and effective.

For unused or used Mounjaro pens that will be exposed to temperatures above 30°C, you will need to keep them refrigerated between 2 and 8°C. You should store them in their original packaging away from heat and light. To ensure the pens are kept at the correct temperature you should store Mounjaro in a cool bag.

If you are travelling by plane, take Mounjaro in a carry-on bag and not in your hold luggage. This is because hold luggage will be exposed to temperature and pressure changes which can damage the medication.

Can I put Mounjaro back in the fridge after it has been left out?

Yes, you can put opened or used Mounjaro pens back in the fridge after they have been left out if they have not:

  • been exposed to temperatures above 30°C
  • been out of the fridge for more than 30 days

Unused pens should be stored in the fridge at all times.

➤ When you request Mounjaro from Asda Online Doctor, it will be sent to your address via cold delivery. This means the packaging will keep the medication at the correct temperature for up to 72 hours. Once you have received your order, it should be placed in the fridge for correct storage.
