Clenil Modulite is a brown preventer inhaler. It contains a steroid called beclometasone, which reduces inflammation in the airways, making breathing easier and preventing asthma symptoms. Clenil Modulite is usually used every day as part of your treatment plan.
Important recent guideline update: Everyone with asthma should now receive inhaled steroids as part of their management plan. This means you cannot be prescribed a blue reliever inhaler alone, so you may have a brown inhaler, like Clenil Modulite, and a separate reliever inhaler that contains a bronchodilator, like salbutamol, or you may have a combination inhaler that contains both a steroid and a bronchodilator. If you only have a blue inhaler or have not been offered a combination inhaler, make an appointment with your regular GP for a treatment review.

About Clenil Modulite
-
-
Clenil Modulite is a steroid inhaler. It contains the active ingredient beclometasone and is used every day to prevent asthma symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. It works to relax your immune system by reducing inflammation and swelling in your airways, which can make breathing difficult.
If you have a Clenil brown inhaler, you should also have a separate blue reliever inhaler, such as Ventolin or salbutamol.
-
-
A Clenil inhaler delivers a corticosteroid (beclometasone dipropionate) to the lungs. Beclometasone mimics the effects of natural steroid hormones produced by the adrenal glands, which are found just above the kidneys. In doing so, beclometasone helps calm your immune system, reducing inflammation in your lungs, which can make it difficult to breathe if you have asthma.
Clenil Modulite works to prevent asthma symptoms, so it will not relieve them during an asthma attack. This means you should have a separate blue inhaler called a reliever inhaler that contains a bronchodilator medication to relax the smooth muscles in your lungs, opening the airways and making it easier to breathe.
How long does Clenil take to work?
Clenil Modulite does not work straight away. You will need to use it every day for it to be effective. Many people notice that they wheeze less or feel less breathless 3 to 7 days after starting to use the Clenil inhaler. However, it can take several weeks to notice the full benefits.

Clenil Modulite needs to be used every day to remain effective. Each inhaler contains 200 puffs, which means it could last:

The active ingredient in Clenil Modulite is beclometasone dipropionate, which has been shown to be highly effective in preventing asthma symptoms. A review found that beclometasone improved forced expiratory volume in one second and lowered the use of reliever inhalers compared to a placebo.
In a recent study looking at the effectiveness of a combination inhaler which contains beclometasone and formoterol, poorly controlled asthma fell from 65% to 17.5% by the end of the study.

Clenil Modulite is a pressurised metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) that delivers a pre-measured amount of medication into the lungs via the mouth. It is easy to use and can either be used alone or with a volumatic spacer. A volumatic spacer helps to deliver the dose effectively, and should always be used by children under the age of 16, or adults who are prescribed a total of 1000 micrograms (mcg) or more a day.
Clenil Modulite is available in 4 strengths:
- 50 mcg
- 100 mcg
- 200 mcg
- 250 mcg
You must use the inhaler exactly as your doctor has told you to. They will tell you how, when, and how many puffs you need to take.
If the inhaler is new and has not been used before, or if you have not used it for 3 days or more, you need to test it first. You can do this by releasing 1 puff into the air to make sure it works. If this is the first time you are using the Clenil inhaler, the dose counter should display ‘200’, indicating 200 doses remain.
To use the Clenil Modulite inhaler, you should:
- Remove the mouthpiece cover and check inside to ensure the mouthpiece is clean and free of debris.
- Hold the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base and your first finger on top of the metal canister.
- Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips around it, being careful not to bite down on it.
- Slowly breathe in through your mouth, then press down on the canister to release a puff of medication. Keep breathing in steadily and slowly.
- Hold your breath and remove the inhaler from your mouth.
- Keep holding your breath for a few seconds or as long as you comfortably can. Then, breathe out slowly.
- If you have been prescribed another puff, wait for 30 seconds and then repeat steps 2 to 6.
- Replace the mouthpiece cover.
When to take Clenil Modulite
Your doctor will tell you when you need to use your Clenil brown inhaler. However, you will usually need to take it twice a day, so in the morning and evening is recommended.
A recent study found that using Clenil Modulite between 3 pm and 4 pm improved overnight outcomes for people with asthma.
How often can you take Clenil Modulite?
Clenil Modulite is prescribed as a regular preventative treatment for asthma and is usually taken twice a day.

If you get any of the following serious side effects as soon as you’ve used the inhaler, stop using Clenil Modulite and use a fast-acting reliever inhaler straight away and contact your doctor:
- wheezing
- shortness of breath
- coughing
-
-
Clenil Modulite may not be suitable for everyone.

Clenil Modulite and other medications
Before taking Clenil Modulite, tell your doctor if you are taking any prescribed, over-the-counter, or herbal medications. Some medications can increase the effects of Clenil Modulite, so it is important that your doctor knows if you are taking anything else before you start treatment.
Can I use my Clenil Modulite inhaler if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or think you might be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, speak to your doctor before starting a Clenil inhaler.

Clenil Modulite is not the only preventer inhaler available to manage asthma. The current UK asthma guidelines state that everyone with asthma must have inhaled steroids as part of their treatment plan. This means that if you are just starting treatment or still need to use a blue reliever inhaler, you should be offered a combination inhaler that contains both a steroid and a bronchodilator called formoterol.
Please note: You will need to see your GP if you are currently using an inhaler and wish to change it. Online doctor services like Asda Online Doctor are not able to make this change.
A combination inhaler can be used in 2 ways:
- Anti-inflammatory reliever (AIR) therapy – this is where you use a combination inhaler in the same way you would use a blue reliever inhaler, as an when needed. However, this type of inhaler contains a corticosteroid, just like Clenil Modulite, so it can reduce inflammation and relieve asthma symptoms. You may be prescribed an AIR treatment plan if you only have asthma symptoms occasionally, at certain times of the year, or your symptoms are triggered by occasional allergens like other people’s pets or exercise. At Asda Online Doctor, we can provide Symbicort.
- Maintenance and reliever therapy (MART) – with this type of therapy, you use a combination inhaler as a preventer and a reliever rather than having 2 separate inhalers. You use it every day to prevent asthma symptoms, but you can also use it as and when needed to relieve symptoms of an asthma attack. At Asda Online Doctor, we offer the Fostair combination inhaler for MART therapy.
If you still use a separate preventer and reliever inhaler, you will need a Clenil Modulite alternative brown inhaler. We can provide:
- Pulmicort Turbohaler – a type of preventer inhaler that contains a different type of corticosteroid called budesonide and works by reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways to prevent asthma attacks. It’s also a dry powder inhaler, which means it is activated by taking a forceful breath in rather than using propellant gases
- Qvar – a type of preventer inhaler that contains beclometasone, the same active ingredient as Clenil Modulite, so it works in the same way, but it is available in different inhaler types, so it may be suitable if you struggle to use a pMDI
If you also need a repeat reliever inhaler, check our asthma service page to see if our doctors can help.
Clenil vs Soprobec
Clenil and Soprobec are similar preventer inhalers that contain the same active ingredient, beclometasone. They work in the same way to reduce inflammation in the airways, making breathing easier and preventing asthma symptoms. The biggest differences are the name and the cost. At Asda Online Doctor, we only offer Clenil Modulite.
Clenil vs Qvar
Clenil Modulite and Qvar inhalers both contain the same corticosteroid, but Qvar contains extra-fine particles and is more potent than Clenil. If you switch from one to the other, a doctor will need to adjust your dose.
